Hamburg

Yesterday we went to Hamburg with my nephew...everyone always ask is that where Hamburgers came from. I always say no way, mostly because I haven't had a decent Hamburger since living in Germany. But after going back and forth I decide to see what Wikipedia had to say on the matter.

Oops I totally messed up on that one....could have been bragging all along, Welcome to Hamburg the home of the Hamburger! According to Wiki, the term comes from German city of Hamburg. "Burg" means castle, people from Hamburg are refereed to as Hamburgers, like Londoners are from London. More than just the term originates from Hamburg it goes back to the 16th century where Russian import steaks in Hamburg and by the 18th century people were requesting Hamburg style steak. And it goes on and on and many have their claim to the first Hamburger!

I rarely see it on a menu here and miss a good juicy Hamburger....in two weeks we land in NY it's a toss up what I will have first a juicy Hamburger or Mexican food....both I miss so much!

Happy Friday!

I remember the days when I craved decent red meat. A good steak or burger was usually my first request upon landing in the states but Mexican was always a close second. And that's all I would want to eat the entire time we were there. Sad that you're not going to be in Germany during the World Cup- they do it so much better over there than in the states. Will you be cheering for the US or Germany?

Who would have thought? I haven't found a decent hamburger in Ireland either and it's not supposed to be known for it! I don't know if I'd want to live there though and be referred to as a hamburger! : )

i get my whopper fix at burger king and i'm happy about that. i do not like what i have to pay for a whopper here though.

go with mexican, and think of me, enduring "german mexican" food.

isn't hamburg nice? did you count the bridges? they are supposed to have thousands of bridges in that town. i adore hamburg!

Well, why not have both? Then you can alternate between the two.

Oh, how I remember that feeling! I hadn't eaten beef in 6 months when I came back from France...due to mad cow...and went straight to Burger King, got a Whopper and ate it in the parking lot! lol I know you are excited! Enjoy what's left of your time!...hugs...Debbie

Well, as long as it is no Ham in a "Burger", I've figured that out too

Wishing you a great new trip and are looking for reports and photos from NY!

Btw dear blog friend: Sorry for being absent for a while. Of course I could have written a lot of excuses, but I guess the most important is to assure you I haven't forgot you (and do appreciate all you're nice comments on mine)!

Now I'm sure that Hamburg is noted for some brilliant things. The fact is....... that I'm a veggie and cannot get excited about Hamburgers. (That is the meat variety!) I'm sure I would get on fine with the residents there!

Oh you'll definitely have to go for a hamburger...no, a triple meat cheeseburger with all the trimmings.

I'm surprised that there aren't any good hamburgers places in Hamburg. That's amazing.

I can't believe it's down to two weeks already! Woohoo!! And that's too bad you haven't had a decent hamburger. Sometimes, you just need a burger!

Two weeks and counting -- you must be over the moon with excitement. There is nothing like a juicy American style hamburger, no matter its origins!

I haven't been by your site in awhile (lost the link when I spruced up mine) and I really love your header! I would say new header but it could just be new to me haha. :D

I'm still not tired of Mexican food. I don't think you can ever get tired of Mexican food : ) I missed that most of all in the UK. There were a few Mexican places but they were disappointing, definitely not like what you get here.

Enjoy these last few days in Germany...and your first juicy burger upon landing back home!

So, so excited for you!!! I remember the days of missing favorite foods from home when we lived in NY and couldn't be home (in Wisconsin!) I'd have the burger, with guacamole!

Lina said...

I didn't know that either. Thanks for sharing.
Bet you are excited to come back. You are right, there is no good Mexican food in Europe. I miss it everytime I go home to Sweden!
Oh and if I was you and would eat both at the airport, one for starter and for dinner. :D

Too funny! I thought I'd drop in to say hello after you stopped in on my blog. My grandfather lives in Wilhelmshaven which I believe is not to far from Hamburg. Haha, small world!

I'd love to get to Germany someday. I've always resented my high school for only offering Spanish or French! I wanted to learn German!

Thanks for sharing!

We had the BEST burger in NYC when we were there a few years ago. It was $15 but really good. :-)
