Sundays In My City- Focke Museum

Bremen, Germany has several museums.......I finally went to one, after living here for the last 18 months! The Focke Museum is located on beautiful grounds with a lovely garden...now frozen over. It deserves a Spring time visit. It was a beautiful modern building with many things to see. The most interesting feature in the middle of the Museum  is a huge shipping boat located outside, that you can only view from inside. The only problem is it was all in German and they headphone things that give wonderful details on each exhibit were also only in German. So my husband and I wandered through trying to read the info provided, it was interesting even though we were clueless on what exactly we were looking at. I was sure I'd find an English book in the gift shop and I could read all about it after the fact......but NO English anything. I have to say I was shocked...and my husband reminded me we are in Northern Germany, where they speak German! OH! right!

So I wish I could tell you more about this Museum but I show you my pretty pictures instead!

This statue was outside and I thought it was pretty cool, it looks like a cornucopia. Spilling out of it are plates with different Medieval looking objects.

Bremen Crest

This vase was not behind any glass, it was gorgeous but all I could think about were kids on a field trip and one of them knocking it over and kaput!

The Museum had a special exhibit call Manieren which means Manners. I could not take pictures in there, but I can tell it is the history of manners in Germany or perhaps Bremen. Not sure but it had two interesting or perhaps odd displays. The first was a thong...1990 H&M started carrying thongs! Okay! And the second was a video showing this guy with a George W. Bush mask on curling threw NYC with a sign on his butt saying "kick my ass".....and they interviewed people kicking him....it was odd. Not sure what either had to do with manners?!

All in all I saw a lot of historical pictures, paintings and artifacts of Bremen pre-war and post war up until modern times. It's a must see but bring an interpreter or speak the language to really enjoy it.

Now head over to UNKNOWNMAMI to see her gorgeous city and all her friends cities too!

Happy Sunday!

That unprotected vase would make me very nervous too! It would be a "goner" in my house :-)

This looks like a really nice museum. Thanks for sharing your City.

Funny. Maybe they meant culture of Bremen or Germany. Or some etiquette of the royalty. I'll google Focke Musuem, maybe it'll be in English :)

I love your pictures. I think you have a very good camera. The color is deep yet still vibrant.

because you are so close, let me recommend the bremerhaven museum of immigration. the headphones have an english setting, and you get to wander through a replica of a ship that took people to america when millions of germans wanted to start a new life there.

it was especially fascinating for me as an american. at the end there is a huge map of america with all the cities with german names lit up.

you can also walk through a room full of american phone books, and look up your relatives who immigrated.

then there is a room full of computers where you can look further into your family history - all created and sponsored by the mormons. they really put a lot of work into that.

i encourage you to make the trip up north!

I just love your photos! But that Manners section really was quite odd, wasn't it? lol

Boy, you gave me a lot to talk about!

First off, the vase would have scared me silly. Things fall over our house -- and not always because of the kids. I am a HUGE klutz!

Secondly, the Manners was odd. What does a thong have to do with manners? Other than I am tired of seeing them above people's pants?

The art work is gorgeous, especially the crests. Sorry you couldn't get any English translation to know what you were seeing.

Now, not to go Beevis and Butthead on you but be careful how you recount your visit to the Focke museum when you get back home. It looks like its English pronunciation might be an easy slip to another less museum worthy word.

Happy Sunday
:-)

I would be so distracted by that vase and the potential for disaster! Even when I watch a movie and there is a fight scene and things are broken and a mess is made? I am so distracted by my thoughts which are :
"WHO is going to clean this all up!!!"

Thanks for taking us along on the museum tour and the pictures were very enjoyable! In addition to damage to the vase, I can imagine someone defacing that car too! On a separate note, as I glanced along the side of your post I noticed Sophie has on a Gentle Leader attachment for her leash. I had to get one of those for Halle (the Standard Poodle) because I am NOT taking 2 separate walks and she is a strong dog and pulls very hard. I have to say the Gentle Leader has helped tremendously!!! Now she can still tug a big but nothing like before I got the Gentle Leader and I can take all 4 dogs on one walk now! xoxo

I love museums. I've been waiting for Princess to be "old enough", whatever that means. Perhaps we'll head to our local art museum soon.

That vase would freak me out. I'd be worried about me bumping it!

love the old crest...wondering how old it is. i'm surprised there was no english....maybe Bremen is a little out of the route for them to bother. it took me ages to go to a mueseum too...guess there's other things to do!

Great pics, I love that car and the crest! And yeah that vase would be toast!

My only questions is - what is the proper pronounciation of Focke? That in itself could be full of meaning. :)

What a pity no English!! And yeh that vase makes me nervous all the way over here. Wonder how they keep it safe. Is it a replica?? Makes you wonder....
