Used by.......

Okay so if I drop dead tonight or early tomorrow, it's because I made Enchilada Sauce with expired Tomato Paste! It looked fine, smelled fine and tasted fine. But in the back of my mind I hear this little voice saying OMG what did you just do poison you and your family, all because you were too hot and lazy to go back to the store. It expired March of 2009 holy crap it's July of 2009! Does this really matter in can goods? Dairy, meats I get that would matter but Tomato Paste?

Funny thing, last night I was making a super delicious orange pineapple carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. The recipe called for 1/2 cup vegetable oil and YIKES I noticed the large Costco size container of Canola Oil had a 2006 expiration date(after I added it to the batter), so if you never hear from me again (or Amy's parents who are coming to my house for dinner) you will know why..... uh oh. Will probably survive but I will indeed replace the Canola oil.....

Earlier this week, a friend at work brought everyone a can of enchilada sauce (I know, it already sounds weird, right?). It had been purchased at the deep discount store where things go when they are somehow damaged. The cans we each got were dented but I went ahead and used mine, praying the whole time the casserole was in the oven. We survived. No one complained. Except that I got a bit of heartburn...as usual. Nothing like living on the edge!

I always figure the hot oven or stove will kill off any germs that may harm us.

Hope you are all feeling okay! I recently did the same thing with eggs (making pancakes) and survived. Cooking in the heat with no a/c is enough of an accomplishment without having to worry about food dates!

I believe you are SAFE! I've read that food in cans lasts longer than stamped dates.
ENJOY your weekend!
Happy 4th of July!

Jeez, I did the same thing today with two-day-expired milk when I made pancakes. So far so good. How are you feeling :-)

I'm sure you'll be fine. I've done the same thing. I sure hope they add a little fluff to the expiration dates.

Have a great weekend.

So it's days later, are we all still ok? I hope so. Happy 4th of July! I do this way too often. My mom says "if it fills 'em and doesn't kill 'em!"

Oh I bet it was just fine. In the old days, they didn't even have a date on them.
Happy 4th to you and your family and have a great weekend!!

I came over from Ann's blog - thanks for the comment on my Boy to Blogger post over there - I was checking out your blog before but it's been really hectic around here that I'm now finally able to post a comment - I'm getting ready to go vacation myself so I'll have a few guest bloggers...including Ann so I hope you check it out. Take care and good luck with everything - oh I almost forgot, I was checking to make sure you survived the expired tomato sauce :-)
