Marzipan

My German teacher gave me what I thought was a mini loaf of bread. The package said Marzipan and something else....It was not bread! What the hell is Marzipan and what are you suppose to do with it? Make something with it? Or just eat it? My husband took one bite and spit it out, daughter did the same! I took a little bite ....me no like!

Marzipan is everywhere here......have you and do you like it?

CHOCOLATE YOU CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MUCH!

They eat it by the bucket loads here n the netherlands! I can not stand it and wont eat it. They use it in a ton of baked goods here or in shapes.

You can make marzipan into the coolest shapes though, fruits, animals,it's almost like a playdough. You can make chocolate filled marzipan, some people use it in cakes..how ever it's used, it never tastes good..lol

it's an aquired taste. like coffee: )

and starting out on one of those blocks, i'm not sure i'd have learned to like it either! (although i think she got you the very best brand.)

even my family in america has learned to enjoy marzipan, when it is properly coated in chocolate - enough dark chocolate to marzipan that you get the balance of the two flavors.

marzipan "potatoes" are really good too, that was my first experience with marzipan. but it does help to start with the chocolate.

i just sent lots of marzipan bread to the states for my family. the big "loaves" coated in chocolate should be eaten by cutting very thin slices.

You eat it but I've never seen it in gigantic loaf form before. That's a lot of marzipan!

I do like it now.-.my butt is NOT thanking me. They cover cakes in it here... you can roll it out..I use it now instead of fondant

If you type in CAKE on the search thingy on my blog, you can see some of the cakes I have made with it... it is really good it you have it covered in something.. (I know... why eat it if you have to hide the taste?) lol

You asked me about sour cream? Ok the sour cream in the netherlands is evil so I have switched over to Creme Fraiche..seriously thats the gift from the gods..lol I love that stuff. It's fattier than sour cream but can be used in place of it in all recipes. I never find sour cream with added anything, espically chives..the flavor choices here are lacking so your best bet is to make that yourself by adding some in it:)

OH WAIT....I did see once where somebody made marzipan babies and they were the coolest....do a google search....seriously, really cool !

I've seen it used to decorate cakes, but I can't imaging eating a loaf of it!!!

Different strokes for different folks.

I've seen marzipan quite a bit, but I've never eaten it.

Have a peaceful weekend!

As you probably know by now it is used for baking either in frosting or making into animals and fruits shapes. Some do eat it plain. Oh I wish I could have seen all of your faces trying this raw. Smile....

I think Marzipan is an acquired taste, one I have never acquired. I would NEVER give anyone Marzipan (or anything I personally would not eat for that matter).

I hope your luggage indeed makes it! You have had luggage mishaps in the past! I just sent my clothes to NJ via FED EX. I do it all the time. This way after a long flight I just walk off the plane. Voila! Clothes are in my room waiting for me! Also my coffee... love it. Have a safe flight and enjoy your visit stateside. NO MARZIPAN!!! xoxo

LOL! "What IS this and what do I do with it??"

Yeah, marzipan is almond paste - just ground almonds and sugar, and there are two types, the type you bake with and the type you can eat as is. That's the kind you got and the Niederegger Lübeck is a famous (and pretty expensive) brand, the king of marzipans, if you like. You're just supposed to cut pieces off and eat it. Aquired taste, though. I can only take so much of the stuff.

My husband LOVES marzipan, especially the big chocolate covered "loaves". He would have been all over the ones you got.

I LOVE marzipan. You can definitely eat it straight, but it's often put in cakes and cookies.

I've heard of it, but that is the full extent of my knowledge. Freckle must know, maybe she'll chime in here...although she's rather distracted waiting for her parents to arrive from Germany. :)

I'm thinking blog giveaway! Who doesn't want a couple pounds of marzipan? Hee.

OMG I love Marzipan. And what the other person said, about there being 2 kinds. NOT the baking kind.

LURV it, although it is fattening. Oh well.

I hear ya. I don't know what the deal is with Marzipan. It just tastes nasty, but it is pretty...

I'm not a fan of the 'pan, if you will. :-) But chocolate -- really good chocolate -- bring it on!!

I've had it and it's okay, but I never crave it.

If you want to make my dad cringe all you have to do is mention marzipan. I don't hate it that much, but I'm also rarely driven to eat it. I'd rather have the unprocessed almonds, really.

But the Germans love it!

Autumn Mist said...

In England they use it rolled out to cover a fruit cake that is going to be used either as a Christmas cake or Wedding Cake. Then we put icing (frosting) on the top. It is horrible!

I've never had Marzipan but it doesn't look that great to be honest, haha.

My dad loves it when it's fresh, but since it's almond paste and I'm not fond of almonds, I only buy it as little figurines that we never eat.I don't like fondant at all either and I think they have very much in common- give me buttercream anyday. That was, in fact, the most important decision for my wedding meal, that we would have buttercream and not fondant on the cake:)
Thanks for stopping by and welcome back- I hope your luggage has found you.

Hi, I am new to your blog! Although I am German, I hate Marzipan! But I always have to send it to friends in the US ;-)
