Sunday in my city-Berlin

Berlin is not my actual city but a mere five hour train ride away. Tomorrow November 9, 2009 marks twenty years since "The Wall" came down. So I thought I would pay a tribute to such an event by sharing some of our weekend visit last October.

Checkpoint Charlie

Memorial wall where The Wall once stood, haunting pictures and names of those lives lost trying to cross.

More Checkpoint Charlie

Brandenburg Gate

Memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe.

Memorial along the river once dividing the city of those who lost their lives swimming across.

Berlin is a huge city with so much to see, at every turn there is so much history. Due to a huge protest that shut down half the city we didn't see it all, so another trip is in the works. I felt the city was very gray and sterile with vast difference in the East and the West. If you ever have an opportunity to visit it does not disappoint.

If anything tomorrow remember how fortunate we are to have our freedom.Have a wonderful SUNDAY!

Do you know Unknown Mami? She's awesome and she created a fun Sunday theme inviting you to get out and take pictures of your city to share with the rest of us.

Thanks for all your comments! How did you make out with trying to get some American tv? Stores in Germany won't sell the products that we have, but you should try the hotspot shield. That seems to work well!

I laughed when you asked me if I was icing my foot the other day. We are still with our temp kitchen and I don't even have a freezer! :0( No ice for me but my foot feels much better. Not wearing those boots again anytime soon though!

Oh, such a great post.
We are fortunate indeed to have our freedom. It is priceless.

Thank you for sharing this! Really wonderful reminder. I will show my son when he wakes up and tell him about the wall.

I'm really loving Sundays in My City.

I have a friend from Berlin who now lives in Langkawi, an island in Malaysia. He has many times talked about Berlin and even he used the word gray.

You got me today...Very gripping and powerful post, Frau. The memorial to the fallen Jews just grabbed my soul so powerfully. Their many lives were discarded so brutally, we will never know what greatness could have come from those dear people..... tears are in my eyes as I type these words.... xoxoxo

Thanks for sharing the pictures. It is a good reminder that we are so blessed to be free.

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I'm fortunate to have my airman home now but there are many families who do not.

I'll be looking forward to your adventures in Germany.

Beautiful pictures Frau, thanks for the tour. I would love to see Berlin someday. I have so many places on my list to see.
I can't believe it has been 20 years.
It makes me so sad thinking about the Jews...:(

XOXO

Oh yes, 20 years, I can't believe it! To me it's like yesterday.
I was born when the year the wall was build, my first son was 2 when the wall came down...

It was a horror! I grew up in East Germany, believe me, I remember, left way before the wall finally fell!

I had forgotten Checkpoint Charlie. I have friends who live in Berlin (2 shrinks) and they love it. It is one of the cities I hope to visit one day. So much to see, so little money to afford it!!

Very interesting. I had a weekend planned that very weekend to meet an old American, we had to cancel it because the city was crazy. Initially I think they thought it would get violent.

It's an amazing city for sure. I've only spent a weekend there but it was memorable.

I would very much like to take a trip and see Berlin for myself. I guess I'm not surprised to hear that it's a gray and sterile city, but I would have hoped it would be otherwise.

Thanks for taking us along to see!

awhhhhh, my Birth City! Thanks for sharing. I can't even believe that I haven't been there since the wall came down! I would love to bring my kids there some day. Well, I should say my boys as my daughter has been there 3 times already and going again in a few days to sing. She brings me back my favorite mints...

Isn't Berlin amazing? It has some great Christmas markets, if you want to see it when it's a little more cheery. :)

It's so very hard to believe that it's been 20 years. Thank you for the pictures. It was just like being there.

I second Jul... Berlin has some FANTASTIC Christmas Markets.
Do come and see them.
OH, and don't forget to let me know that you're coming to my chosen city. I would love to show you around the "not so traveled" places.
